Ready to eat in under an hour, these Oven Baked Chicken Tenders are crisp and golden on the outside yet tender and juicy in the center. Savory with a subtle sweet and tangy taste, they're a quick, kid-friendly protein source that's great for weeknights and meal prep!

My family and I eat chicken at least a couple times a week, rotating through meals like my Grilled BBQ Chicken, Italian Chicken Cutlets, and Chicken Parmesan Stuffed Peppers. However, my kids' favorite option is this baked chicken tenders recipe.

I'm not complaining, though! With simple steps and just seven ingredients, they're ready to eat in under an hour and pair well with everything from my Loaded Bacon Potato Salad to an Easy Italian Arugula Salad. Plus, leftovers store well. So, I often make a large batch to keep on hand for those nights when I just don't have time to cook.

Key Ingredients and Notes

Ingredients to make crispy oven baked chicken tenders.
  • Mayonnaise - This not only tenderizes the chicken but also contributes to the crisp breading. As it cooks, the water content evaporates, leaving a layer of fat that promotes browning and locks in moisture, creating extra juicy chicken.
  • Honey Mustard - This infuses the chicken with a sweet, tangy taste, and the acids help tenderize the poultry.
  • Bread Crumbs - I use plain breadcrumbs, seasoning them myself. However, I've also used panko breadcrumbs for a lighter, crispier coating.
  • Chicken - I use boneless, skinless chicken breasts and cut them into strips. Or, if I can find them, I sometimes like to save time and use chicken tenderloins instead.

Possible Variations

  • Chicken Breasts - I've also tested this recipe with boneless skinless chicken thighs, and it works just as well. Just be sure to keep an eye on the oven and adjust the baking time as needed.
  • Spices - Add to or switch out the seasonings with any stand-alone seasonings or spice blends you have on hand. Garlic powder and black pepper make great additions. Or, I sometimes like to add cayenne pepper or smoked paprika for a bit of heat.
  • Breadcrumbs - For a gluten-free option, swap the plain breadcrumbs with gluten-free breadcrumbs or gluten-free Panko breadcrumbs.
  • Cheese - Include grated Parmesan cheese in the breadcrumb mixture for a slightly more savory taste.

How to Make a Crispy Oven Baked Chicken Tenders Recipe

Create the breading - Whisk the mayo, honey mustard, paprika, onion powder, and dried parsley in a small bowl. Then, mix the breadcrumbs and remaining seasoning in a separate large bowl.

A bowl of egg wash and a bowl of chicken tender breading.

Bread the chicken - Brush each chicken strip with the mayo mixture, making sure to coat both sides. Then, press each piece of chicken into the breadcrumb mixture.

Bake - Place the chicken strips on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, and lightly grease them with cooking spray. Bake until the chicken is golden brown and reaches an internal temperature of 165°F.

Amanda's Expert Tips

  • Create equal-sized chicken tenders. Cutting the chicken into uniform strips helps them bake evenly so every piece is juicy and tender.
  • Remove the tenderloin. For the best texture, trim off the tendon (that little white strip) before breading. It can be tough and difficult to chew if left on.
  • Press the breading into the chicken. Use your hands to gently press the breadcrumb mixture into each chicken strip to help it stick and create a crispier crust.
  • Rest the chicken. Let the tenders sit for five to ten minutes after baking. This locks in the juices and keeps the chicken from drying out.

Ways to Serve

Of course, I always serve my baked chicken tenders with dipping sauces such as ketchup, ranch, BBQ sauce, or honey mustard. Then, I like to add a few side dishes for a filling meal.

Some of my go-to options include fries, crispy potato wedges, stovetop white cheddar mac and cheese, maple roasted acorn squash, and sautéed green beans. They also make great additions to salads, grain bowls, burritos, and quesadillas!

How to Store

Store leftover chicken tenders in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. For longer storage, freeze the cooked tenders in a single layer on a baking sheet until solid, then transfer them to a freezer-safe bag or container. They'll keep well in the freezer for about 2-3 months.

To reheat, warm frozen or thawed chicken tenders in the oven or air fryer until hot and crispy. Avoid the microwave if possible, as it can make the coating soggy.
