Onion soup mix was a pantry staple growing up and was used in some of my mom's favorite family recipes. While I still love the classic flavor it adds to dishes like pot roast, meatloaf, and dip, I prefer making it from scratch so I know exactly what's in it.

This homemade onion soup mix comes together in just a few minutes and is an easy substitute for the store-bought packets. It's one of those pantry staples that's always nice to have on hand.

Why You'll Love This Recipe
- Better Flavor - Making it from scratch gives you the classic onion soup mix flavor with simple ingredients you probably already have in your pantry.
- Simple Ingredients - Made with just 7 pantry staples, you'll know exactly what's going into your recipes.
- Budget-Friendly - Making your own seasoning blend costs less than buying individual packets.
What's in Dry Onion Soup Mix?
This seasoning blend is made with seven simple pantry ingredients that work together to create the classic flavor of onion soup mix.

Dried Onion Flakes - These provide the signature onion flavor. You may also see them labeled as minced, chopped, or dehydrated onion. They're a great substitute for fresh onions whenever a recipe has enough time for them to rehydrate.
Beef Bouillon Granules - Beef bouillon gives this seasoning its classic onion soup mix flavor. For a lower-sodium option, use reduced-sodium bouillon, or substitute vegetable bouillon to make it vegetarian.
Other Seasonings - Garlic powder, onion powder, dried parsley, kosher salt, black pepper, and a touch of sugar round out the flavor. The sugar helps balance the savory ingredients, but you can leave it out if you prefer. If you enjoy a little heat, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes.
How to Make Onion Soup Mix
Simply measure all of the ingredients into a small bowl and stir until they're evenly combined. Use the seasoning immediately or transfer it to an airtight container for later.

How to Store Your Seasoning
I usually store my homemade seasoning blends in small mason jars, but recycled glass jars from pickles, pasta sauce, or olives work just as well. Store it in a cool, dark pantry or spice cabinet for up to a year.
